AMPL Programming Library Assistant


Job Description

Summary:

Under the guidance and direction of the Youth Services manager, the programming library assistant will assist in the coordination of any and all program or community engagement activities of the Alexandria-Monroe Public Library. The Programming Library Assistant will plan for, execute, and assist in all areas of library programming. Other responsibilities of this position may include but are not limited to assisting patrons with any possible library related reference work and other clerical tasks as needed.

Youth Services Manager
 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in initiating, planning, and conducting a variety of programs, activities, special events and community outreach opportunities for all ages.

  • Assist in maintaining ongoing programs that support library initiatives and objectives, while introducing new programs and special events that respond to patron and community needs.

  • Assist in the creation and distribution of library event calendars and posters

  • Create and assist other programming staff to make creative displays to promote the library’s events and collection

  • Utilize social media and the website to promote library events

  • Maintain knowledge of programming trends by attending conferences, watching webinars, and following professional literature.
     

Other Duties:

  • Provide friendly and efficient customer service including reference, readers advisory and account maintenance

  • Assist patrons in locating materials in the collection.

  • Exhibit a reasonable level of comfort with standard office technology, including but not limited to computers, fax machines, and photocopiers.

  • Represent the library at various community events

  • Keep current with library policies and procedures

  • Various duties as assigned.

Self-starter that is able to work well with minimal supervision and is able to exercise good judgement;

Able to handle multiple activities or interruptions at once and to work positively and effectively within a team model;

Able to plan, organize, prioritize and manage time wisely;

Possess strong people skills and is able to work with patrons of all ages;

Possesses strong active listening skills and the ability to understand and accurately follow directions;

Possesses strong communication skills with the ability to speak and write effectively; and

Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with staff, patrons, and others in the community.
 

Working Conditions:

Work is primarily performed in a busy office environment. The active environment requires frequent walking and standing with occasional bending and kneeling; ability to safely navigate stairs while carrying items is required. Able to safely carry items or maneuver book carts weighing at least 10 pounds. Regular travel offsite to various outreach events is required.


Education, Experience, and Training:

High School diploma or GED is required. Graduation from college/university is preferred but not required. Prior library work and programming experience is preferred.


License and Certification Requirements:

Ability to acquire a Librarian Certificate 6 (LC 6) as described by Librarian Certification Administrative Rule 590 and the Indiana Public Library Certification Manual.

Position requires a valid Indiana driver’s license and current auto insurance policy.

Background investigations are required. However, a criminal history will not necessarily preclude an individual from consideration for a position or from continuing employment.
 

Position Hours:

The Library anticipates that this job will require 25-40 hours per week. Position requires the applicant to have open availability in order to successfully work a varied schedule which includes evenings, weekends, and Sundays.

Position is non-exempt from the requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
 

Salary Information:

Position is hourly and classified as a Grade 101 on the Library’s salary schedule.

Hourly rate range: $10.25-$18.45
