The Summer Reading Program is here! Our theme this year is Build a Better World.

What is the Summer Reading Program?

The Summer Reading Program is a six week program designed around a common theme to enhance literacy skills and to promote the library, it’s programs and services to the community it serves.

When is it?

Summer Reading officially starts Saturday, May 27th and it runs through Saturday, July 15th.

Our Summer Reading Block Party kicks off the event on Saturday, June 3rd from 11am-2pm. We’ll have games, food, a bounce house, a dunk tank, and a live broadcast from 96.7 Blake FM!

Completed entry forms and game cards must be received before 5:00 pm on Saturday, July 15th.

How does it work?

For little ones ages 0-3:

The Early Literacy Summer Reading Game gives you fun ways to build your child’s early literacy skills and get them ready to read.

  1. Register and pick up an Early Literacy game card.
  2. Practice fun activities with your kiddo and have fun with your child while talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing that helps develop skills need to be ready for school and life. Most importantly, have fun!
  3. When you’ve completed the whole sheet, come visit the library for a special prize – blocks, sippy cups and more.

For Kids:

  1. Sign up at the Youth Services desk starting Saturday, May 27th.
  2. Pick up your Summer Reading Bag and choose your Game Card goal: reading by books or by time.
  3. If you reach the halfway point in your Game Card, you earn a midway prize.
  4. A completed Game Card gets an entry into the grand prize box of your choice.
  5. Visit the library each week to earn more chances to win prize drawing entries! Visiting the library for 4 weeks or more earns another grand prize entry.
  6. Game Cards may be turned in starting Tuesday, May 30th and the last day to turn in your game card is July 15th at 5:00 pm.
  7. Grand prize drawings will be on Monday, July 17th.

For Teens:

  1. Sign up at the special Summer Reading station at the Youth Services desk beginning Saturday, May 27th.
  2. For every eligible item you check out, you will get an entry form.
  3. Fill out your entry form with your name and phone number.
  4. When you return your items, put your completed entry form in the prize box of your choice. Teen Prize box located in Teen Section along the east window.
  5. Entry forms may be turned in starting Tuesday, May 30th.
  6. Entry forms must be turned in by 5:00pm on Saturday, July 15th.
  7. Grand prize drawings to be held on Monday, July 17th.

For Adults:

  1. Sign up at the circulation desk beginning Saturday, May 27th.
  2. For every eligible item you check out, you will get an entry form.
  3. Fill out your entry form with your name and phone number.
  4. When you return your items, put your completed entry form in the weekly prize box of your choice.
  5. Entry forms may be turned in starting Saturday, May 27th.
  6. There will be six drawings, one each week for a different prize. Turn in your entry forms corresponding to the weekly prize you would like to win. The scavenger hunt winner will be drawn at 5:00pm on Monday, July 17th.
  7. As an added bonus, adults can participate in our Tour of Alexandria Scorecard. Visit or perform all of the items on the list to be entered into the grand prize! Be sure to tag us and the places you visit on Facebook!

Who can participate?

Anyone who is able to check out items from the Alexandria-Monroe Public Library, attends a program, who is part of the homebound program, or whose parent, guardian, or caregiver is eligible to check out items from the library can participate.

What are the prizes?

For Kids:

5 Grand prize drawings will be held for kids on Monday, July 17th.

Grand Prizes for kids include:

  • Pool Party at Alexandria City Pool
  • A Drone
  • A Sphero Robot
  • A LEGO kit
  • 2-Week Unlimited Computer Time, a Sphero robot, LEGOs, or 2-week unlimited Computer Time.

For Teens:

You have a chance to win six different raffle prizes this summer.
The drawings will be held Monday, July 17th.

Grand Prize:

  • 4 pack of tickets to King’s Island and a $50 gift card to cover the gas!
  • Prize 1: Mini – Fridge
  • Prize 2: $40 Barnes & Noble Gift Card
  • Prize 3: One of 3 $20 McDonald’s gift certificates
  • Prize 4: Pool Party at Alexandria City Pool
  • Prize 5: 2 weeks unlimited Computer time

Winners will be called the morning of the drawing and may pick up their prize any time during the library’s hours of operation.

All raffle tickets that do not win one of the above prizes will be automatically entered to win the grand prize. You do not have to be present to win any of the raffle prizes.

For Adults:

For each book, magazine, audiobook, and program you attend, or e-book you check out, you can enter your name to win one of many prizes. All prizes drawn at 5:00pm on dates listed.

  • Drawing 1: June 5th – Frosting and Crust Gift Card
  • Drawing 2: June 12th – Subway Gift Cards
  • Drawing 3: June 19th – Soap and Sunshine Gift Set
  • Drawing 4: June 26th – Casey’s Gas Card
  • Drawing 5: July 3rd – Cooking Set with Summer Reading Aprons
  • Drawing 6: July 10th – Car Detailing from Humphries of Alexandria
  • Grand Prize: Finish your Tour of Alexandria scorecard by July 17th at 5:00pm to be considered for the drawing. We’ll have several prize options for the winner to choose from.

Winners will be called the evening of the drawing and may pick up their prize any time during the library’s hours of operation. You do not have to be present to win any of the prizes.

What can I read?

You can read library books, magazines, e-books, interactive Tumblebooks, and even listen to audiobooks! We’ll let you count just about anything just as long as you check it out from the library!

What’s new this year?

There are some minor changes to the program this year.

For Kids:

You can pick your own reading goal of counting books or counting time this year. No little plastic trinkets anymore, just more chances for larger prizes, and fun activities at the library.

Also, for the second year, we are offering a special Early Literacy program for ages 0-3 with chances to win blocks, sippy cups and more.

For Teens:

The reading log has been eliminated. All regular raffle tickets that do not win a prize are automatically entered into the grand prize raffle drawing.

For Adults:

Completed entry forms should be placed directly in the weekly prize drawing box of your choice. When you have completed your scavenger hunt sheet, you may submit your name and phone number on the grand prize list, must follow all scavenger hunt directions including posting to social media/taking pictures.

When does it end?

The Summer Reading Program ends for all ages on Saturday, July 15th at 5:00pm. All entry forms and game cards must be completed by this date.

When is the Finale Party?

Instead of a finale party, we are hosting the Newport Aquarium’s Shark Cart on Wednesday, July 12 from 5:30-6:30pm! Experience live sharks in a whole new light by getting up close and personal with these fascinating and severely threatened creatures.

How do I get an Indiana Beach ticket?

We hope that Indiana Beach continues the long standing tradition of offering tickets as part of summer reading. However, we have yet to receive any communication from them on the tickets.
