How do I get a library card?
You may register for a library card at the Circulation Desk at the library. The card is free to residents and non-resident property owners of Alexandria and Monroe Township. You will be asked to present a current Indiana driver’s license or other government-issued photo ID, as well as proof of residence, such as a current utility bill, in order to receive a card. Non-resident property owners are required to present a current paid tax bill listing their name and the address of the property owned within the library district.

If you live in a township not served by a library, you may purchase a non-resident card for $75.

If you live in an area that is served by a library that is part of the Statewide Reciprocal Borrowing Covenant, you may be eligible for a reciprocal borrower card. Reciprocal borrowers may use the library, but are not entitled access the resources of the Evergreen Indiana library consortium.

If you would like access to all public libraries in the state, you may purchase a Public Library Access Card (PLAC card) at the Circulation Desk.

I have an Alexandria address, so why can’t I get a free library card?
The library is supported by the taxpayers of the city of Alexandria and Monroe Township. As such you must reside or own property within the library taxing district to get a free library card. It is entirely possible to have an Alexandria address, but not reside within the library service district. We use data from the US Census Bureau and the Madison County Treasurer’s office to determine eligibility for a free library card.

What if the library doesn’t have the title I’m looking for?

As much as we pride ourselves on our collection, there are times when we are not going to have what you are looking for. Don’t worry, listed below are several options available to help you get the titles you need.

Evergreen Indiana: The Evergreen catalog contains nearly 7 million items, so chances are great that one of the over 100 member libraries has what you are looking for if we do not.  Simply place a hold on the items and have it sent to Alexandria for you to pick up. Most books and audiobooks are holdable, but some restrictions do apply to newer titles. DVDs, music CDs, and gaming software from other libraries cannot be held and sent to Alexandria from another Evergreen library. However, you may travel to another Evergreen location and check these items out.

Inter-library Loan (ILL): The library has access to the holdings of libraries across the country through our ILL service. See one of our staff members to submit an ILL request. Postal charges may apply.

Purchase Request: See one of our staff members to submit a purchase request for the library. Each request is reviewed and the decision to purchase is based on a host of factors such as cost, vendor availability, demand, and durability.
